Antalya's Climate and Mediterranean Vegetation
Antalya has a classic Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. The city is known for its long sunny season, which is a major reason why it became Türkiye's busiest holiday destination. Did you know that you can find palm trees on the coast and cedar forests with snow in winter less than two hours' drive away?
Antalya's Seasons
Summer (June to September)
Summers are long and hot, with daytime temperatures often above 30°C and very little rain. Sea water is at its warmest in August, when it typically reaches the high twenties.
Autumn and spring
April, May, October and early November are pleasant, with warm days and cooler nights. These months are ideal for hiking, rafting and sightseeing.
Winter (December to February)
Winters are mild on the coast, and most of the year's rain falls in these months. Snow is rare at sea level but common in the Taurus Mountains above the city.
Vegetation From Coast to Mountains
- Coastal zone: maquis shrubs such as myrtle, oleander, laurel and carob, plus citrus orchards.
- Lower slopes: forests of Calabrian (Turkish red) pine, the most widespread tree of the region.
- Higher slopes: black pine, Taurus cedar and juniper, which survive cold winters.
- River valleys: plane trees and, in Köprülü Canyon, natural Mediterranean cypress forests.
Why the Climate Matters for Activities
The long dry season makes outdoor activities possible for most of the year. Rafting on the Köprüçay continues through all four seasons, while boat trips and diving are best from May to October, when the sea is calm and warm.
Practical tips
In summer, plan active excursions for the morning, wear sun protection and drink plenty of water. In spring and autumn, pack a light jacket for the evenings and for trips into the mountains.
Water and sea temperatures
The sea stays pleasant for swimming from late May to early November. In spring the mountain rivers are cold and full of snowmelt, which makes them refreshing on the hottest summer days.
