First Time Rafting in Antalya: What to Expect

Signing up for your first rafting trip can feel a little daunting. This beginner's guide explains exactly how a rafting day in Köprülü Canyon unfolds, from the early minibus pickup to the drive home, and answers the questions first-timers ask us most often.

A Beginner's Rafting Day, Hour by Hour

Early hotel pickup

The minibus collects you from your hotel, and the time depends on your resort. Kemer pickups start at 06:45, Alanya runs between 07:00 and 09:00, Antalya and Belek between 08:00 and 09:55, and Side, the closest resort, after 09:15.

Have a quick breakfast before you leave, or ask your hotel to prepare a packed one.

Meeting at the canyon

All groups gather at the rafting base at 10:30. You can leave your bag on the bus, and this is the time to apply sun cream and remove any jewellery.

Equipment and safety briefing

Each guest receives a helmet, life jacket and paddle. The guide shows how to fasten the life jacket snugly, how to sit on the side of the raft and how to respond to paddle commands, and it only takes a few minutes.

Time on the water

You spend about two to three hours on the river. Lively rapids alternate with calm stretches where everyone can jump in and float, so expect to get completely soaked, and to join a few good-natured water fights.

Lunch and the ride back

Lunch is served beside the river. On a combo package, the afternoon continues with zipline, jeep safari, buggy or canyoning; otherwise, the bus heads back to your hotel, usually with a few happy guests dozing on the way.

Common Concerns of First-Time Rafters

Can I go rafting if I can't swim?

Yes. Your life jacket keeps you afloat at all times, and you are free to stay in the raft during the swimming stops.

What happens if I fall into the river?

It happens occasionally and is usually more funny than frightening. Float on your back with your feet pointing downstream, and the guide will pull you back in within seconds.

How cold is the water?

It is fresh mountain water, even in August. On a hot day it feels wonderful, and the sun warms you up quickly afterwards.

Am I fit enough for rafting?

If you can sit in a boat and paddle a little, the answer is yes. The guide steers and the current does most of the work.

Can children join?

Yes, from three years old. Children under four go free and those aged 4–10 pay half price.

Five Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

  • Wearing flip-flops: they slip off in the river, so choose sports sandals, water shoes or old trainers
  • Taking an unprotected phone: leave it on the bus or use a waterproof pouch
  • Forgetting dry clothes: a full change makes the journey home far more comfortable
  • Skipping sun cream: sunlight reflected off the water burns faster than on the beach
  • Not mentioning ages or health conditions: we can only recommend the right tour if we know
