Tahtalı Cable Car: Olympos Teleferik From Kemer

The Olympos cable car near Kemer takes you from about 726 metres to the summit of Tahtalı Mountain at 2,365 metres in a single ride. From the top you look down on the whole coast from Antalya to Kemer and Phaselis, often above the clouds. It is a cool escape on hot summer days.

The cable car was opened in 2007 and built by the Doppelmayr Garaventa group. It climbs more than 1,600 metres in height over steep, pine-covered slopes inside the Beydağları Coastal National Park. As the cabin rises, the beaches of Kemer get smaller, the forest thins out and the rocky, almost bare summit of Tahtalı appears. In the morning the air is usually clearest, while late afternoon brings soft light over the sea.

What to Do at the Summit

• Panorama terraces: views along the Lycian coast, over Kemer, Çamyuva, Tekirova and on clear days as far as Antalya.
• Café and restaurant at the top station for a drink or a meal with a view.
• Photos above the clouds: on many days a sea of clouds lies below the summit.
• Snow in spring: in early spring there is often still snow at the top while people swim on the beach below.

Mount Olympos in History

In antiquity Tahtalı was known as Mount Olympos, one of several mountains of that name in the Greek world. The nearby ancient cities of Olympos and Phaselis lie at its foot, and the eternal flames of Chimaera at Yanartaş burn not far away. The Lycian Way long-distance trail also passes through this area.

Practical Tips

• Bring a jacket. It is often around 10 °C colder at the summit than on the beach, and windy.
• Sunglasses and sun cream: the sun is strong at 2,365 metres.
• Check the weather: in strong wind the cable car may not operate.
• Combine it with a visit to Phaselis or a beach afternoon in Tekirova.
