Tour Program
Myra: the Lycian rock tombs
The coastal road west of Antalya brings you to Demre, the ancient city of Myra. The Lycians carved their tombs straight into the cliff face, many of them with columns and pediments that make them look like small temples. Below the cliff lies a Roman theatre decorated with stone theatre masks, one of the best photo spots of the day.
Boat trip to Kekova and the sunken city
Next you board a boat towards Kekova Island. Along its shore, the walls, stairs and house foundations of an ancient town that slid into the sea after earthquakes are clearly visible through the clear water. The site is protected, so you see the ruins from the boat rather than swimming over them. The trip also passes turquoise bays and the village of Kaleköy, crowned by a castle.
The Church of St Nicholas
Back in Demre you visit the church of St Nicholas, who was bishop of Myra in the 4th century. Stories of the gifts he secretly left for children grew into the figure of Santa Claus. Frescoes and mosaic floors survive inside, and pilgrims from many countries still come here.
Return
In the afternoon we drive back along the coast and reach your hotel in the evening.
Why Take This Tour?
Few day trips from Antalya combine so much: an ancient city on land, a boat trip on the sea and one of the most important Christian sites in Turkey. The coastal road towards Kaş, with mountains dropping straight into the sea, is a highlight in itself. It is a relaxed day that suits couples, history lovers and families alike.
