The Hamam Ritual Step by Step
- Warming up: after changing, you relax in the warm, humid hall. The heat opens the pores and loosens the muscles.
- The navel stone: you lie on the göbek taşı, the large heated marble platform in the centre of the hamam.
- Kese scrub: the attendant rubs your skin with a rough mitt called a kese. It removes dead skin cells and leaves the skin surprisingly soft.
- Foam wash: a cotton bag is filled with soapy water and blown into a mountain of light foam, which is spread over your body for a gentle wash.
- Massage: the treatment ends with a relaxing massage.
- Rest: take your time to cool down slowly before you get dressed.
A Tradition of Many Centuries
Public baths were part of daily life in Anatolia long before the Ottomans: the Romans built large baths in Perge, Side and Hierapolis, and the Seljuks and Ottomans developed the domed hamam that we know today. For centuries the hamam was not only a place to wash, but also to meet friends, celebrate weddings and rest. Visiting one is still one of the most authentic ways to experience Turkish culture.
Good to Know
- Wear swimwear under the traditional cotton wrap (peştemal).
- Avoid the hamam with fresh sunburn, as the kese scrub can irritate the skin.
- Not recommended during pregnancy or with heart or blood pressure problems; ask your doctor if unsure.
- Do not eat a heavy meal just before, and drink water afterwards.
