What Is a Canopy Tour? How It Works and Is It Safe?

A canopy tour lets you travel through the treetops or across a valley by gliding along steel cables between platforms. It feels adventurous, yet it requires no experience or special fitness. Did you know that the idea grew out of methods scientists used to study rainforest canopies before it became a tourist activity?

From Research to Recreation

Biologists working in tropical forests needed a way to reach the canopy, where much of the forest life is found. Ropes, platforms and cables gave them access. In the 1990s, operators in Costa Rica turned the idea into guided tourist routes, and canopy tours soon spread worldwide.

How a Canopy Tour Is Built

  • Platforms: fixed to strong trees, towers or rock, where riders clip on and off.
  • Steel cables: stretched between platforms with a slight downhill angle so gravity does the work.
  • Trolley: a pulley that runs on the cable and connects to your harness.
  • Braking system: a guide-operated or automatic brake that slows you before the next platform.

The safety equipment

Each rider wears a full-body or sit harness and a helmet. You are attached to the cable with two lanyards, so you are never unclipped while on a platform edge. Guides check every connection before you leave the platform.

What to Expect on Your First Ride

After a short briefing, you practise on a low line. On the real cable you sit back in the harness, hold the strap and let the guide handle the braking. Most people say the first few seconds are the most exciting part; after that, they simply enjoy the view.

Who can join?

Canopy and zipline tours are suitable for most ages, but there are weight and height limits for safety. Wear closed shoes and tie back long hair.
