Beşkonak: the village where the rafting begins

Most people who raft in the Köprülü Canyon pass through Beşkonak without knowing its name. It is a small farming village in the Taurus foothills, about 45 minutes inland from Manavgat, where the valley narrows and the Köprüçay river turns a milky turquoise. Trout restaurants line the road, goats wander the slopes, and in summer the car parks fill with buses from the coast. This is where your rafting day starts.

Why the river is so good here

The Köprüçay is fed by springs and snowmelt from the mountains, so it carries water all summer long, even when other rivers in the region run low. Below Beşkonak it flows through a gorge of limestone walls and plane trees, with a mix of easy rapids and long calm stretches. That combination is what makes it suitable for first-timers and children from four years old.

Beyond the boat

If you have a car, stay a little longer. Upstream, the Roman Oluk Bridge still crosses the gorge, and the road beyond it climbs to the ruins of ancient Selge, a theatre and city walls set among strange rock formations. Both are an easy afternoon trip after rafting.
